Drone Drops Package of Contraband (Tobacco, Marijuana & Heroin) into Ohio Prison Yard Sparking Minor Riot ~ Call Michael A. Haber, Esq. @ 1-888-SHARK-8-1

Below is Mansfield Correctional Institution ("MCI"), located in Mansfield, Ohio (which is about 65 miles southwest of Cleveland).

MCI was opened in 1990, covers 1,224 acres and presently holds about 2,700 inmates ranging from minimum to maximum security classifications.  On Monday, July 27th, 2015 at 2:33 pm there was an unscheduled "special delivery", a la an unmanned drone, of a package into one of the prison yards which was at the time populated by about 200 inmates.

The drone dropped a package containing at least 144 grams of tobacco, 65.4 grams of marijuana and 6.6 grams of heroin into the Ohio prison yard while inmates were outside, sparking what has been described as "a huge fight".  According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction video footage showed the drone flying over the recreation yards immediately before the fight began, and an investigation determined that the drone had just dropped a package (which was intended for an unnamed inmate) on the north recreation yard, which was then thrown over a fence into the south recreation yard, sparking the melee.

(No, that is not THE melee, just A melee...)  Corrections officers called for assistance, ordered the inmates to stop fighting and used pepper spray to control the fight.  At the time about 75 inmates were in the north recreation yard and 130 on the south recreation yard, and all were taken into the gym, where they were strip-searched, run through a cell sensor and checked by a clinic.  The nine (9) inmates who were actually involved in the brawl were placed into solitary confinement and no staff or other inmates were injured.  There is no information being released on the person who was controlling the drone.

(Again, no, that is not THE drone...)  Per reports drones usually can't fly in software-controlled flight plans (like prison yards) because they lose their GPS signals, but it seems that the drone in question beat the odds.   Ah, the little drone that could....
